If you are having a problem, you will not be able to see what the problem is if you let XP install updates at shutdown (unless you start looking at and deciphering the update log files). To fix the problem, first you need to know what the problem is. You have not identified the problem yet - except that something is not working. Use Internet Explorer, Tools, Windows Update, Custom to see what Microsoft thinks about your current setup. From there you can see what updates need to be applied and then install them, then watch them install and if there is a problem you will then be able to see what update is causing the problem and then can you decide what to do about it. Once you know what the problem is with the updates, you can fix it. If you don't know what the problem is, you could be in for a long and frustrating waste of otherwise productive time cycles trying various suggestions. Sometimes the auto update feature gets hosed and just "reseting" it will clear up the problem (and give you fresh log files), but you don't even know what the problem is yet.
