Did all of the above (other than daylight savings) but still kept
getting problems, but all good Rob pointed me to a free alternative
that's working fine.

Daylight savings I've left intentionally broken as at work we're having
problems with our VMWare View setup where people logging into View
sessions from home are having issues to do with their home machines not
being on the correct timezone, and this syncing into the View session
and causing all sorts of nasties on some of our systems, so my machine
at home is the sacrificial lamb for testing the fixes we're trying. But
that's another story altogether, although I'd love it if anyone is using
View and has a solution to this.

We've tried the fix from here:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1006773

but no go, although it's a 3.0.2 fix, and we were running 3.1.2. Now
running 4 and the problem still there. Weirdly whilst the timezone info
shows fine in a patched up environment, in a "bad" environment (such as
my machine) it seems to show the start date for daylight savings and end
date as being the same date, which whilst is a "fix" that works fine for
the clock itself (if that is the solution the above URL is supposed to
achieve, doubtful from the name of the reg key though) still breaks
things when apps are using checks on the start/finish dates for looking
up historical data or putting in future dated data.

Hmmm, seem to have gone off on a VMWare View problem rant, spose I'll
change the subject on the off chance anyone else out there is using this
and might be able to shed some light on things.

Actually there IS a problem with iiNet's news server , after reading your
post I did some checking , it appears that it take up to 5 - 10 minutes for
a new post to show up in a Ng and replying to the thread will take even
longer, up to 15 minutes or that the reply article gets dropped.

My original post to you didn't show up in aus.computers and I am replying to
your post using reader.telstra news server.
Keep an eye on iinet.test , you will be able to find out what's going on
with the news server.
I opened a thread on Whirlpool so hopefully somebody at iiNet will fix the
problem.

You could try and uncheck the box to enable daylight savings , I did that on
my XP desktop and I haven't had any problems.

All good, this Eternal September mob seem to have a good thing going, so
I'll stick with this for now, it's free and does the job very nicely.

Yeah tried that although I'd prefer to keep it on in the environment,
you never know when someone will try yet another forced daylight savings
trial on us and by then I'll have forgotten that I'd removed the tick.

But even with the tickbox off it still syncs to the machine the session
is running on (the time doesn't, the GMT time is still straight off the
ESX server, just the timezone information).

Kind of annoying, as the only patch from MS that seems to truly work is
an "on request" patch, and whilst we've deployed that in the work
environment I really don't want to be advising people to install it at
home, as the first machine that screws up within a week or twenty of
that patch being installed will have people banging on the door
screaming at us swearing black and blue that the patch we advised them
to install has caused doom and destruction on their home PC and
demanding support forever more for any issue that plagues them on said
home machine <shudder>.

You would be better off using telstra's
reader.news.telstra.net

It has binaries and is reasonably reliable most of the time , I use it for
the binary Ngs and as a standby for when iiNet's news server stuffs up.

Freely available? Might take a look at some stage, but not really
interested in binaries, and this one seems to do the job with text based
newsgroups quite nicely.
