From: Gonzalo Fernandez on 29 Oct 2006 01:19 Using a laptop, I double click on Connect to Small Business Server, it reaches the server, but times out when authenticating the user. It returns error 721. It worked ok a few weeks ago. How can I solve that? Gonzalo Fern?ndez

From: Chris Swinney on 30 Oct 2006 14:13 I have a similar issue to this, however, VPN access is intermittent - sometimes a user connects with no issue, sometimes they have the same problem as is seen here. There are never any changes to hardware or software settings. It always appears that they can't connect after a reboot of SBS. We use a Netgear DG834 router with PPTP forwarding. Certainly you can see TCP port 1723 forwarded at the router and received at the server, but RRAS sometimes never answers the call. I have also been informed that GRE protocol 47 maybe the issue and have be passed on some PPTP ping tools that should be available on the Win XP support tools disk that might narrow dow the problem further. As yet I haven?t followed this up but hope to soon. "Robert L [MVP - Networking]" <noreply(a)hotmail.com> wrote in message news:e6kpY$2%23GHA.4712(a)TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... It could be the GRE issue. I upgraded both to the latest firmware about six months ago and saw intermittent loss of GRE connection. Both routers were behaving the same. On reverting to the previous firmware, the problem went away on both units. It's possible there has been a new release by now, I'm not sure which version had the problem. There have been at least three versions of hardware, of which two were software-compatible, so you may have to do some research here. My client has hardware version 2, running firmware 2.10.22. It's a shame, as the v3 firmware has additional features such as site-to- site IPSec VPN, but unfortunately they didn't get the PPTP right.
