Meter is checking gain, the card is just changing the digital to analog. I really dislike the WinAmp graphics, but haven't fully explored the skins available. The Creative Extigy 'card' is external, in a breakout box, and is connected via USB. The bundled software for it includes a player and recorder that looks like it was designed for/by kids. There are tons. Personally, I avoid Winamp 5.x in favor of 2.x, no need for the new "features".
