From: Bengt T on 4 Aug 2010 02:17 I am planning to install virtualization sw into my laptop. Which criterias should I consider when I compare different alternatives (Wmware, Virtualbox, Xen...) and which are the pros and cons?

If it just concerns a few simple tests or some parallelly working OS I'd recommend VirtualBox. No special kernels and easy GUI-based administration. CU, Mszi.

It won my recent VM software test in the easiest to use by far when you don't read any of the documentation. I still find VMware clunky in comparison and Xen/KVM are a bit more specialised.

No special kernels and easy GUI-based administration. Although you _do_ need a special kernel driver (but that is true for almost all of the virtualization packages). By using the OBS (openSUSE Build Service) repo, you do not have to compile those yourself, though: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Virtualization:/VirtualBox/openSUSE_11.? (fill in the right subversion of your openSUSE installation). You must at least get the virtualbox-ose package and the one with the kernel driver for YOUR kernel: virtualbox-ose-host-kmp-default/desktop/pae/whatever The non-ose (Open Source Edition, free but a bit behind vs. non-ose) version you have to get from their site: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads and then compile the kernel driver yourself. Every kernel update you'll have to repeat the latter. They DO have a rpm repo so that you don't have to compile the whole package itself. The website also details the differences between the ose and non-ose editions. -- ****************************************************************** ** Eef Hartman, Delft University of Technology, dept. I have been running the Sun and later the Oracle one because of its USB support. I'm using the opportunity to ask: Has the OSE one been developed as for USB support? There's also another thing in VBox that I haven't solved and that may well lead to returning to VMWare server, I'm missing one of its features in VBox: I was able to log out from my main machine sessions and leave the VMWare virtual machines running. This is something I can't do with VBox. The VBox machines are run like "applications run by the host user", not like independent machines like they are under VMWare server. I think it's been on some wish lists somewhere but I haven't heard any news, I wonder if there's any development on that.
