I got lots of virus on my pc yesterday (trojan...). I installed Norton
and think it killed the virus. After I restarted the pc iexplorer does
not work. Also the controllpanels program wont work. What is wrong? Is
it something in the bootsector?

And how do I fix the problem?

If you can ping and get Firefox to work but can't get IE to work, check the
proxy server setting. Chances are it's on. Turn it off.

You're probably still infested. Installing an AV on an infested machine
is not a good idea.

You need to clean the machine and *then* install the AV.

Probably not.

You can try cleaning the machine with removal tools (try David Lipman's
Multi AV tool and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware).

If automated tools don't do the trick, you might want to try HiJackThis
(HJT) and have the results analyzed at one of the 'forums' the analysts
hang out in.

The *best* solution is to restore the most recent known good disk image,
but that requires that you had previously created one. You may end up
with a 'flatten and rebuild' scenario requiring that you have your data
backed up in order to not lose same.

What malware was (supposedly) removed?

Not all malware are viruses but all viruses are malware. Don't assume that you have lots
of 'viruses' instead of you are juts plain infected with malware.

Norton isn't that great and misses the non-viral malware.

Download, install, update and then execute, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Report back what happens after you sscan the computer.
