From: Pete on
I posted about this issue about a week ago under the topic "KB 954430
keeps installing KB954430." With help from PA Bear and Shenan Stanley,
I fixed the first issue (which was the subject line), but have yet to
get Windows Update to offer Vista SP2. I opened a ticket with Microsoft
last Thursday about this but have had no response since then other than
"We'll get back to you."

As I see it, I have two options left: download and try to install the
stand-alone SP2 package or re-install the factory image of Vista and
start all over again. Because this machine shows other issues (it
sometimes completely locks up on bootup, requiring a power-off), I'm
inclined to re-install Vista. Before I do that, I thought I'd try one
more time for suggestions here. The following are MVP Shenan Stanley's
suggestions with my results.

1. I did get the msxml4 update (KB954430) installed, or at least WU no
longer offers it. Rebooted, but no offer of SP2.

2. Install patches:
KB 955430 was already installed and not uninstallable. Nevertheless,
I downloaded the patch. When I ran it, it said "not applicable to your
system" and stopped.
.NET Framework 3.5 sp1 was already installed, showing the following
3 patches: KB953595, KB958484, and KB963707. The "Family Update" link
to which you directed me wanted the following 3 files installed in this
order: KB958481, KB958483, and KB958484. I uninstalled KB958484. When I
ran the first two patches, I got the "not applicable to your system"
message. KB958484 reinstalled fine. Rebooted and no offer of SP2.
KB949104 downloaded and installed. Rebooted and no offer of SP2.

3. Clean up.
MBAM found one "infected" registry entry related to an IE homepage
hijack. I hadn't noticed any issue with IE (this might have resulted
from Lenovo's forcing of a home page). I allowed MBAM to remove this. No
other items were found by MBAM.
SAS found only 16 tracking cookies. SAS removed these.
MSRT didn't find anything.
Rebooted and no offer of SP2.
System Update Readiness Tool KB947821 downloaded and run. Rebooted
and no offer of SP2.

4. Suggestions from KB948343
Checked and SP1 (not a prerelease version) is installed.
WU shows 5 Optional updates. Despite the article, I'm very reluctant
to install any of them, particularly the driver. Here they are:
Silverlight (KB974331)
Intel 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection
Group Policy Preference Client Side Extensions (KB943729)
Windows PowerShell 1.0 (KB928439)
OfficeLive add-in 1.4 (includes Silverlight)
There were no hidden updates.
Already ran the System Update Readiness Tool.
H/W & S/W that will prevent WU from offering SP2
"Intel ICH7 systems with Bluetooth that are connected to a USB
2.0 hub" -- As near as I can tell, I don't have this. The computer does
have integrated Bluetooth, but according to msinfo32, it has Intel ICH9
Family USB Universal Host Controllers. I'm not sure how to determine
what Bluetooth is connected to.
vLite wasn't used (at least as far as I'm aware; the Vista was
preloaded by Lenovo).
System is not an HP TouchSmart IQ700 model
Windows Live Messenger 14 is not installed.

5. WU Log. This is really long. Some of the entries were run about two
weeks before I received the computer. I assume that this was done at the
Lenovo factory after the initial Vista image was loaded. There were a
number of FATAL and WARNING errors both in that part and in the part
that I ran. [If anyone is interested, a portion of the log is included
in my last post under the previous subject line.] I could also upload
the entire log file to a website if that would be helpful.

6. Questions
A/V: Using NOD32 a/v. Tried disabling it and going to WU, but SP2
still not offered.
Using only Windows firewall.
No Internet Proxy in use
No services disabled either manually or by GP.

7. MS Support -- pending

8. Last resort. I'm not there yet.

Pete,

You're not alone with this issue of SP2 not being offered to Vista SP1
x64 systems. See the last post in this thread:
Service packs May not be offered for installation through Windows Update
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/ddc270b9-057c-4658-9fd5-ac42bf5e0a29

Someone from Update Product Group replied to the thread but appears to
have lost interest. The OP is going to continue with it until he finds a
resolution. It may be worth your while to add on to the thread as there
is somewhat of an MS presence in that forum.

BTW, the only driver I can see that may need updating is the NIC,
Intel 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection. Not sure if that's what's
holding up the "arrival" of SP2 but see if there is a newer driver for
it. I'd check Intel's site before allowing a driver to install via
Windows|Microsoft Update.

Did you check the logs created when the System Update Readiness Tool
(CheckSUR) ran ?

Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log and the CheckSUR.persist.log

Thanks for the info. I haven't checked the SUR logs, but will. I'll also
go checkout the forum thread.

Although I said that one of my options was to reinstall Vista, I got
this laptop close enough to the Win 7 launch to be offered a free
upgrade to Win 7, which is "in the mail." Rather than reinstalling
Vista, I'll probably just install Win 7.

I *had* intended to do an upgrade install, but at this point, I'll
probably do a clean install of Win 7. I only have Office 7 and a few
other apps to reinstall if I do.

[Ideally, you would have posted this follow-up in a reply to your original
thread so we'd have all the story in one place.]

You omitted one very important detail in your newest post: Are you currently
running Vista SP1?

BroMow's comments notwithstanding, I'll give you...

<canned>
Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 2 (SP2). This support for Windows
Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) is valid until November 26, 2009. Availability of
chat or e-mail support differs depending on your geographic location. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?prid=13014&gprid=582034 &
select appropriate category (i.e., Download issue; Installation issue;
Issues after you install a service pack).

Vista SP2 Installation Tips:

.. Your computer will restart several times during the installation process:
Make certain you've saved your work and closed all open applications before
beginning the install.

.. Disable (1) your anti-virus application, (2) any real-time system
protections afforded by any anti-spyware applications (except Defender), &
(3) your third-party firewall (if any) and then (4) enable the Windows
Firewall _before installing or uninstalling_ Vista SP2.

.. The installation process can take an hour or much longer, depending on
server demand. If you're installing SP2 on a portable computer, make sure
that you plug-in the power cord and have the battery inserted into its bay.

.. Vista SP1 is a prerequisite for installing SP2. If you use Windows Update
or the Automatic Update feature in Windows Vista, you will not be offered
the option to install SP2 until you first install SP1.

====================================================

HOW TO install Vista SP2 manually

<QP>
Generally, these errors can occur if the system files are corrupted.

To make clear the current situation, I recommend downloading Windows Vista
Service Pack 2] in Normal Mode and installing it in Clean Boot Mode. Please
follow the steps below.

Note: This SP2 installation can be affected by certain third party programs
running in the background. If you are running any third party applications
such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost
the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs
(McAfee, Norton, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down
during our troubleshooting process. Please be sure to enable them again when
the update process has been completed.

Step 1: Download Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Standalone Installer
===================================================
1. Download Windows Vista SP2 from the link below according to your System
Type:

....Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - Five Language Standalone for x32-based
systems (Size: 348.3 MB)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=a4dd31d5-f907-4406-9012-a5c3199ea2b3

....Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - Five Language Standalone for x64-based
systems (Size: 577.4MB)
http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/3/b/83b8c814-b000-44a4-b667-8c1f58727b8b/Windows6.0-KB936330-X64-wave0.exe

2. Save the download to your desktop, do not Run it!

Step 2: Install Windows Vista SP2 in Clean Boot mode
========================================
Please disable all startup items and third party services when booting to
avoid conflict when installing Vista SP1:

1. Click "Start", type: MSCONFIG in the search box and press Enter.

Note: Please click "Continue" if the "User Account Control" window pops up.

2. Click "Services", check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click
"Disable All" (if it is not gray).
3. Click "Startup", click "Disable All" and click "OK".

Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup
programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other
programs. We can manually run these programs later. Go ahead and reboot your
system when prompted as you are exiting MsConfig.

4. After rebooting, right-click on the downloaded Windows Vista Service Pack
2 Standalone Installer, select "Run as Administrator" (if necessary) and
follow the instructions to install Windows Vista SP2.

To restore the computer to use a Normal Startup, repeat step 1 above. Then
click "Normal Startup" on the General tab, click "OK", and then restart the
computer.
