My Nokia N86 is on v20.115 which is the latest Vodafone have authorised
for their phones.

Generic N86 have had v21.xx and now v30.xx.

I cannot get Vodafone to say whether or not they intend looking at
allowing updates. Any ideas?

Did occur to me to change the code on the phone to a generic one and use
usual update method from there. Friend however bricked his doing that.
Previously had no problem de-branding my old N95.

Current Nokia PC software seems a bit flakey both on my old XP machine
and on my new windows 7 64 bit one.

Not familiar with Download it and apply by USB. Can you give me some
guidance where to look please. TIA.

Need to install a program called Nokia Download - came on the CD with the
phone, but doubtless you can download the dowload program.
