In the case of some ASUS/Realtek drivers, the cause may be that the user did not "drill down" far enough in the options to properly enable the microphone. Even then, it may take more than one try, since some options enable other options. Finally, there may be a module involved that seems to not be installed by default on some Realtek chips. it is a sound mixer module, and can be found on the ASUS web site among others.
