From: Puddin' Man on 15 May 2010 19:06 I've got POST and bios on a new build around Asus P7H55D-M EVO mobo. Potential object is multi-boot with W2k sp4 and Win7. I've a slip-streamed ISO CD with the W2k sp4 stuff that needs to install 1st (as I understand it). Problem: I need a keyboard -and- mouse to install. Near as I can tell, the W2k stuff has no driver for USB kb, mouse. Mobo has a ps2 port for kb, none for mouse. Serial port on the Asus board is non-standard, won't take my serial/ps2 adapter. Anything I plug into a USB port is gonna require a USB driver that W2k does not have? Sooooo, I've got a Logitech USB kb/mouse combo that is useless for install. I can get it to detect either my ps2 mouse or ps2 kb, but not both. Damn their incompatible modern hardware. Any ideas? Thx, P "Law Without Equity Is No Law At All. It Is A Form Of Jungle Rule."

(I just moved the OS from the previous motherboard, and picked up where I left off. I used an Ultra133 TX2 card and kept my OS disk connected to that.) I think Windows installed a "HID" (Human Interface Device) driver on its own, so eventually my USB mouse would work. With all the "New Hardware" wizard activity, the problem was that the mouse wasn't the first thing to be installed. So I had to wait until some other stuff finished first, before the OS automatically installed what was needed. Like you, I was a bit worried that eventually the dead mouse would be a problem and I'd get stuck. The other tiny issue, is USB isn't quite as seamless as PS/2. On my PS/2 mouse, I've never had any variation in performance. On USB, if there is heavy I/O, I can get erratic behavior on the mouse. Perhaps if I was scrolling, the scrolling would stop for a few seconds. I was surprised just how crappy it was - the mouse activity should be creating interrupts, and they should be serviced right away. So I was disappointed in my first "half-legacy" motherboard, with how well the mouse worked. If you stick the Asus motherboard CD in the machine, you may be able to get the drivers on there to install. Maybe the chipset drivers will allow the USB devices to be recognized. My system here is dual boot (WinXP SP3, Win2K SP4), and both of them work. On Win2K, I have two "devices" that I can't figure out what they are, so I'm still seeing the "new hardware wizard" for those. Oh, and the HDAudio is a bit screwy at startup. It runs in mono, with the output on the right speaker only, until I open the audio control panel, and make some trivial change. That seems to sort out the driver and make it work right. Once you get past those issues, Win2K works fine, USB mouse and all. Paul
