I wanted one to communicate via iChat with family in the service
overseas. I settled on a Logitech.

As I recall, the model is Logitech Pro. This model is typically $115 to
$125. There are several other models much less expensive. The advantage
is that the model I chose is "plug it in and it works with a Mac". No
drivers, no configuration, no nothing. I consider it worth the cost.

speaking of webcams:

one of the craziest damned things I ever encountered, and I'm not sure
why I feel that way; it's kind of Brazil meets 1984 meets Kafka with a

MacAlly IceCam2 works great with my G4 10.4.

This model is supported on the Mac
<http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/webcam_communications/webcams/devices
/4528&cl=us,en>.

However regardless of whether support is offically stated, any UVC
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_video_device_class> based USB cam will
Just Work™. It might not have all the software enabled features on the
box, but as a straight webcam they will work fine.

FYI: make sure you get a webcam with auto-focus. It's not much more
expensive nowadays and very handy to have.
