Sorry, Charlie, > you need version blah, blah, blah of java. So you felt compelled to start a NEW thread instead of replying to the existing one that mentioned dogfetcher. So now you have a thread out of context. > Well, I'm on somebody else's computer. They don't have it. They won't let > me update it. Would you let someone load stuff on your computer? Would you let anyone RUN an unknown program from a USB thumb drive they decided to stick into your host? Well, Windows users do in the form of the autorun.inf file but some Windows users are savy enough to disable auto-play on removable media because of the potential of infection from auto-run of programs from those sources. > Isn't the whole idea of a portable app the ability to run it on any > machine without leaving anything behind? Yep, provided you are even to permit run any apps from removable media, or that the USB ports are even enabled in that publicly accessible computer. > Oh yes, by all means, I want the yahoo toolbar on someone else's machine. And now you're back to complaining about dogfetcher yet your entire post is out of context because you started a new thread instead of replying to the existing one that mentioned this product. > Portable apps should run on VANILLA installs of an OS with NO ASSUMPTIONS > about what's there or requirements to add anything. You need capability? > Put it in the portable app. Um, you think there is actually some OS on that USB thumb drive? Or that the other person's host suddenly boots to it because you shoved the USB stick into a port on their host? The portable app is going to run under whatever OS is currently running on the host.

Thahks, I haven't looked very far into the .paf format. Will this run on any flash drive, or does the whole thing have to use the .paf paradigm? I'll give it a shot when I get a few minutes. It only adds 104MB to the flash contents.

Otherwise, I'd agree with you. > How it got there is irrelevant. You can't just stick the word "portable" onto the box and make it portable. It's like pasting a "green" sticker over the sticker on a gas guzzler to attract tree-huggers.
