What is the best freeware to select complex images (i.e., people) and cut
and paste them onto another digital photo.

For example, what Windows freeware allows me to select a person out of one
picture and paste that non-rectangular selection onto another picture with
a famous movie star or nice vacation backdrop?

I tried Irfanview but it only cuts out rectangles. I tried MSpaint but it
won't layer me transparently so that the subterfuge is transparent. I can't
figure out how FastOne can do the selection and seamless paste.

I think the "magic wand" in Paint.NET might work but I can't for the life
of me figure out how to get that magic wand to only select me and then to
paste me as an additional layer onto another picture. It seems to select
almost everything and it won't paste back when done. (I'm looking for a
tutorial but haven't found it yet.)

What photo-editing freeware do you use to cut irregular objects (i.e.,
people) out of one picture and superimpose them as seamlessly as possible
onto another picture?

Thanks,
Lisa

PhotoFiltre can cut an irregular shape from one photo and paste it to to
another. The "Lasso" and "Polygon Lasso" enable you to do this.

Cheers,
Amos

No matter what, it's going to take work, practice, and skill... but
instead of "cut and paste" try THIS routine.

Use Gimp.

load your background picture

Load your other picture that you want to use a person out of as a new
layer on top.

Set "Alpha Transparency" on that layer so it can show the lower layer

Lower the transparency of the new layer so you can see through it a
bit.

Move, Rezise, Stretch (or whatever) the new layer so the part you want
is where you want it.

Use the ERASER" tool on that new layer to erase the parts you don't
want. Start with a big eraser and make it smaller and smaller as you
get to the fine detail.

Change the transparency back to full, adjust colors, and all that
other stuff that really good artists do to fake a picture.
