If you have to go through a number of switches and routers and portions of your network have very high percentage utilization because of other people hogging the bandwidth, then you could easily experience VERY long delays, many seconds.

Yes. Let me rephrase it. Under ideal considerations, 500ms is pretty high for initial contact. That does not mean that you would use 500 ms for a timeout, maybe into the seconds and generally, those are special needs. As a web service HTTP request, unless its programmatically done using XHR (AJAX), you automatically get a 25-35 second timeout and thats based on the socket layer. If the client is not a browser but using an HTTP protocol, it can also use a timeout. I guess, a "Smart" client can tune it based on the target host. If the target host is local (client/server same machine), then a low timeout is reasonable. If the target host is on the LAN, a low timeout is reasonable. If the target host is on the WAN, then this where a high timeout should be expected. On a relative note, for our RCP client/server system: If the client and server is on the same machine, then we use a local RPC bind (ncalrpc). If the client and server are remote from each other, then we use a TCP/IP RPC bind (ncacn_ip_tcp). Both have different timeouts RPC constraints. -- HLS

One of the little cognitive psychology numbers. I've played a pipe organ that had a 1.5 beat delay. Because I play by ear and not by rote playing of notes, I quickly discovered that it was unplayable.
