I guess it would be nice to flip a 2-D drawing to 3-D but that would be icing on the cake. What do you recommend for simple mechanical CAD drawings?

The best mechanical CAD program to date is still MS Paint. It's simple. Free. And easy to use. Doesn't have 3D rotation though. For that, you gotta pay!

However, I have looked at many other CAD progs and came to the same conclusion about all of them. If there were 10 easy ways to get something done and one hard way, the developers always took the hard way. No logic at all. Have you tried Open Office Draw?
