Was it a gift? Was it just a CD or a copy of an original CD without a Product Key? Is it a full-fledged installation CD, including a Product Key (doubtful)? If so, you should be able to create a newer (SP3-level) version by using a method known as slipstreaming. Post back for guidance if this is the case. Otherwise, you may purchase a generic OEM XP Home installation CD (at the SP3 level -- and which comes with a Product Key!) here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116511 Note that an OEM license means this installation of XP Home is good only for this particular computer and may never be transferred to another PC. A more expensive Retail license (which can only be purchased second-hand) may be transferred.

All he has to do is use the IT > guy's CD and his product key and he's set to go. His IT guy "had to remove it." Furthermore, we don't know what kind of installation CD he used. OEM? Retail? Volume License? And from what it sounds like, the IT guy won't be visiting him again, anyway. And this is not a run-of-the-mill Dell or HP that already has a license to run XP Pro and an accompanying COA sticker. The PC was built by OP's daughter's friend, and OP never indicated that the PC came with *any* operating system. OP's acquaintance did give him "a copy of XP Pro circa 2002" -- but that statement doesn't contain enough information. Is there a Product Key? Probably not, but of course it's possible. But OP needs to provide this information to get useful advice! And if this is a complete package, then all OP's daughter needs to do is perform a Clean Install of XP Pro, using that CD and the accompanying Product Key. (But it doesn't sound like this is the situation. Still need more info!)
