From: McGrath on 16 Feb 2010 13:39 I'm looking for a good OCR scanning package coming with scanner or stand alone. I'd appreciate any recommendations of hint which one should I choose. I'm familiar whit Omipage 14 basic OCR but someone said that Readiris is better. TIA for any info.

Omnipage basic is just not that good. I had Omnipage 12 (the full ver) and later upgraded to Omnipage 14. I decided not to upgrade that version since it seems to do a good job with whatever I throw at it. I've also heard that ABBY Finereader is very good, but I don't see a need to own more than one, so I haven't tried it. But I only use OCR occasionally.

I used the very early version of it , year ago and it was then quite good and accurate. Thanks !
From: Jethro Pull on 17 Feb 2010 06:03 I've used both OmniPage and ABBY. ABBY is simpler and has done everything I've thrown at it so far. I also like the Nuance PDF app which will convert scans to Word, etc. On 2/16/2010 5:21 PM, Charlie Hoffpauir wrote: > On Tue, 16 Feb 2010 18:39:59 -0000, "McGrath"<McGrath(a)uni.net> wrote: > > >> I'm looking for a good OCR scanning package coming with scanner >> or stand alone. But I only use OCR >occasionally. Yes. No need to stay on the upgrade treadmill. Even when they talk of "90%" better between versions they fail to mention that the thing is already 99% accurate, so you don't get much more bang for the improvement. A lot of the "extras" come in the interface. If you don't spend every day using OCR, this is more confusing than helpful. Look for something that delivers output in a useful format, probably PDF. You should be able to get a legit copy of an older version at a knock down price. And if you have OmniPage basic with a scanner you should qualify for the upgrade price rather than a "virgin install". In any case, Nuance doesn't always check for old versions when installing an upgrade. MK
