And both use ribbons. I haven't seem any of them for years. But I still have some. Both are very noisy too. Oh wait, there is thermal dot matrix too. And some can use very smooth regular paper with a thermal ribbon. Or just use thermal paper. Although they are somewhat rare today as well. And they only do black as far as I know. Thermal paper fades in time, which is the really bad thing. In less than a year the paper can be almost or completely blank. I don't know, ink jets don't like to sit and I use them and I only print like once a year. And yes cleaning them and getting them going once again is a pain. But it is still probably your best bet. One having individual color cartridges and a replaceable head is probably even better. -- Bill Thunderbird Portable 3.0 (20091130)

Epson are bad (?) for drying out as they use ink tubes. Check out the Canon Pixma series. I do print runs each month or less and never have problems with clogging or drying out. > Laser toner apparently spews fine particles in the home > and is messy. I had a Dell Photo 964 (made for Dell by Lexmark) and now a Lexmark X9575 (love the descriptive name!) and both have excellent color and no problem with ink drying out. The only problem I have with the Lexmarks is that the software is hard to uninstall and reinstall if its necessary to do it. I really like my computer talking to me when printing starts and stops or the ink is low or there's a paper jam! Tom Lake
