From: Merciadri Luca on 29 Apr 2010 16:02 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, Yesterday, I came up with complex calculations with complex numbers. That was for alternating currents, and I used my HP 50g hoping that it could simplify fractions of fractions of fractions of complex numbers. But asking for `SIMPLIFY' only gave me the reduced fraction (i.e. a fraction with two members, a normal fraction), still with complex numbers at the denominator, and I would have liked to see only complex numbers at the numerator. Is there somebody out there who likes complex denominators? There are many ways to get rid of them, and, habitually, one multiplies both parts of the fraction by the complex conjugate. For example, a trivial example is, according to the fact that i is the imaginary unit: 1/(1-i)=1(1+i)/((1-i)(1+i))=(1+i)/(2). Why does my HP 50g never simplify such expressions into my desired form (i.e. the one where there are only complex numbers at the numerator)? This is a practical issue. Thanks. - -- Merciadri Luca See http://www.student.montefiore.ulg.ac.be/~merciadri/ - -- The dog is nude though the clothing cost a penny. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Processed by Mailcrypt 3.5.8 <http://mailcrypt.sourceforge.net/> iEYEARECAAYFAkvZ5coACgkQM0LLzLt8MhxkjgCfc8ABqs5Dy2eDFxCMeBYoUYC6 IPcAnAkZb0r8n5P9E3gVxJwYO9HS1gyx =HM5O -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

This is a practical issue. Strange! My HP 50g *does* simplify 1/(1-i) to (1+i)/2 using SIMPLIFY, and even using EVAL. This even happens with all the flags in their default states. Try resetting your flags. To do this in RPN mode, type 66.02 MENU and then press the RESET menu key. This will turn on algebraic mode; press MODE +/- ENTER to return to RPN mode. If you keep your machine in algebraic mode (heaven forbid), type MENU(66.02) and then press the RESET menu key. If that doesn't help, please advise. -Joe-
