From: mm on 28 Apr 2010 02:16 Why does shutdown take so long; why does it not complete sometimes What takes my computer running XP home, SP3, so long to shut down during the stage after "Saving settings", which iirc is called "shutting down". It takes about 20 to 22 seconds most times, and I can't figure out what there is to do. Especially when, before I start ShutDown, I have already exited all my programs, which I figure causes all the program settings in separate files to be saved. If it is saving the registry, how come that isn't done in the Saving Settings stage? If saving the registry is not done during Saving Settings, what settings are saved then? Related question perhaps: Sometimes it doesn't complete its shut down. It seems only to happen when I turn off the monitor and leave the room before it's done. :) The next morning, it's still running, but I can't remember anything unusual about the night before. Thanks.
