Why would you want to use WSS and miss out on all of the features that
Microsoft Search Server Express offers? I've been trying to figure
out what I'm missing by deploying MSSX compared to WSS and I can't see
anything... Am I missing something?

Thanks,
Matt

I don't know what is typical for this forum but maybe you mean that it's
typical that you got no answer ...

The major difference I can suggest is that MSSX comes with a database
system that has a 4GB limit. WSS 3.0 Basic Installation has a database
system that doesn't have a 4GB limit.

So if you install WSS 3.0 first and then MSSX, only the Index/Search
database has a 4GB limit. Your initial databases (before MSSX
installation)have no limit and provided you are careful when creating
databases after MSSX installation (you need to override the default) you
can have limitless content databases after MSSX installation. You can't
however override the 4GB limit for the index/search db.

[The reason there were no answers here could also be that many people
have moved to the (MS) forums. There's rarely a post there that doesn't
get a reply.]

Excellent post! Exactly what I wanted. I have a few more q's and I
should know that path I need to take.

If I install WSS and use the internal db, can I scale that out to a
farm?

If I use SQL Standard(processor licensed) on one machine and install
WSS on another, would I be able to scale out to a farm that way? I'm
thinking so, but would like a confirmation.

Also, what is the url to the other place? I'd much rather use that
since you hit the nail on the head with your assumptions.

TYVM,
Matt

(I'm rarely here these days so no guarantees that I'll see or reply to
any follow-ups).

1. It will scale out to a farm but that will mean moving to a "real" SQL
Server that will cost you money. (In other word the content isn't lost).

2. Yes. That's the smallest (and quite a common) "farm". With WSS 3.0
there's usually little need to go for the typical MOSS configuration of
2 Web Front Ends; 1 "MOSS"; 2 x clustered SQL Server. WSS 3.0 + Back-end
SQL Server is usually enough and is something to move to when a single
server WSS 3.0 installation is having load problems.

3. http://social.technet.microsoft.com:80/Forums/en-US/category/sharepoint

is the URL for the collected set of SharePoint forums. Each forum then
has its own URL.

Look at the sticky post I wrote (top of the thread list) in the General
and Setup/Admin forums for information on which forum is suitable for
what. They are not divided by product but by kind of question - this
would be setup/admin.

(You need a (MS) passport to post to the forums - such as the name/pw
you might be already using for Hotmail.)
