2. It looks like AMD64 will run; if I burn an AMD64 Install CD-ROM
and try to boot it on a 32-bit processor, do I get a
"Don't be a smartarse" type error message, or does it crash???

Yes, amd64 kernel will run fine.

You will get a "warning message", yes, but that's all :-)
