From: Stefan Patric on 30 Aug 2009 16:15 Looking to upgrade the CPU on my 2 year old custom built system. Currently -- aBit KN9 (not SLI, Ultra or S) AM2 motherboard, 2.0GHz Athlon64 (single core), 4GB RAM, Fedora 9 (64-bit). Was looking at just getting an Athlon64 X2, but came across an article (several, really) saying that the Phenom X4 (AM2+ model, not the AM3 II one) quad-core will work. Other opinions say it won't. AMD says the sockets and CPU are backward compatible, but aBit doesn't list my model motherboard as compatible with the X4. Anyone have a system such as I'm considering up and running who knows for sure before I take the plunge? FWIW, I'll be upgrading to Fedora 12 a few weeks after it's released-- currently set for Oct or Nov--before any hardware changes are made. 12 is suppose to be a majorly "tweaked" version optimized for performance and fast booting without too much "new" stuff compared to 10 and 11. So, if there is notable improvement in performance, I may forgo changing the CPU or just get an X2 which I know is 100% compatible. Thanks. Stef |
