Prev: New motherboard in but in a BIOS loop
Next: I need advice on how best to setup laptops for on\off network use.
From: PtoP on 7 Dec 2009 03:35 I have purchased a nearly new laptop and on every occasion I use 'C:\\Documents and Settings' the words 'Chris Brown.NUMBER THREE\' appears. This is obviously the name of the previous installer and as for the NUMBER THREE\ I have no idea what that is all about. I would appreciate assistance in changing these details to my own name please. There must be an easy way but I know not. Thank you. FS

The advice: Use the installation media (recovery/restoration set, etc) to cleanly install Windows and all software that comes with said laptop. That is the only way you can be sure everything on it is yours and not someone elses. Otherwise you are just assuming the only thing they left behind was their name and not a whole host of other stuff tracking your Internet usages, giving them access to the machine, etc. ;-) -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

'NUMBER THREE' is either the name of the computer or the domain it is/was on. Your options are to create a new user account, or to wipe the disk and start over. If you have the capability to do the latter it is highly recommended, as you don't know what other issues you're going to hit otherwise. Before wiping, take a note of the installed devices in Device Manager, especially display, LAN, etc. This will make it a lot easier to find the drivers.
