I prefer it as it >not as cluttered as Win XP. > A friend used to run Win98 and was always having me fix problems with it. Then she got XP. I quickly learned that XP cant just be fixed like W98. In 98 I can just go to dos and fix most things. To me, XP looks like a nightmare when it screws up, and her computer seems to screw up far too often with XP. I told her I cant help anymore. I dont think XP would even run on my old PIII 700mhz puter. Then too, XP has an open gateway to Microsoft and others. It's similar to spyware and they can do whatever they want with your OS. I started computers in the 1980's and used dos. Back then I was in control of my computer. Win3.x was similar, but every newer version of windows seems to take away more of our ability to control our own computer, and XP seems to have taken away all that was left. Besides that, I still run lots of old dos software and I heard that much of it wont work under XP. Actually, I have not yet found any software that wont run in Win98. I know many games dont, but I dont use games. But, I am getting more and more websites that tell me to upgrade my browser. Ebay is the latest. Most of the time I just ignore that message and the page loads fine. It's just the scripts and flash movies that may not work, but I normally have all that stuff disabled anyhow. >>Its just like I still use IE5.5. >>The last >> time I went on Ebay I got an error message that said I must upgrade my >> browser to use Ebay. Maybe they got the bugs out since then but I am not too comfortable trying it. I dont use OE at all. I never liked it, and using it for newsgroups is horrible compared to Agent. I still use Eudora 3.x for email. It's text only, and that makes it very safe. If someone sends a html file with graphics, I only see text, but I can manually click on the pictures if I want. Everytime I have installed Windows, I immediately delete the OE directory. Why waste drive space on something I will never use. >> Thanks again > >You're welcome. > >Mary

I too use Win98SE for my primary OS, and use Win2000 for the more exotic things that won't run under 98. I too am dedicated to avoiding any part of XP, and Vista also. For much the same reasons stated herein, and below here. >>Yes, there will eventually be a problem if you want to use newer software, >>so a lot depends on what programs you use as I said before. Besides that, I >still run lots of old dos software and I heard that much of it wont >work under XP. As stated above, I did try XP briefly, and it did run on my old Pentium III, 600Mhz system. But I share your opinions above - I started out with DOS, and went up thru Win3 and Win95, then 98, then 98SE, and now part time with win2000. Your comment that the newer versions take away more and more of our ability to control our computer says it very well, indeed! It reminds me of adding more and more "training wheels" to your tricycle, even though you've graduated to knowing how to ride a bicycle! That seems to be the modus operandi of microsoft as time moves on. Must be to sell to a bigger audience, who don't want to spend the time we did to learn what we did. > >Actually, I have not yet found any software that wont run in Win98. Plus, a friend of mine just the other day taught me something I'd not realized - Opera can be configured to look like I.E. I plan to try that out shortly. Might be worth checking out yourself. >As I mentioned in another post on here, I installed IE6 shortly after >it came out, and it completely screwed up windows so bad that I had to >reformat and start over.
