Starting back on March 26th my attempts to install Windows Defender updates
(KB915597) have been failing on a regular basis. This never happened before.
I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium, SP2 with 2 GB of RAM, Windows
Firewall, Spyware Doctor, MBAM, SAS, CCleaner, all WU's current. No other
3rd party firewalls. I get the dreaded error code 80070005 which I've
googled but can't discern what's going on.
After one failure last week I ran CCleaner, MBAM, SAS, and Spyware doctor
(which only found several tracking cookies). Then I restarted and I was able
to install the (kb915597) update. I understand that this failure has
something to do with `permissions', but after that I'm basically clueless.
Now every time this same update is offered it fails. Each time this happens
a new restore point is created, which is to say that I'm generating lots or
restore points only to be losing some of the older ones.
Anyone have any insight as to why this common, non-problematic WU is all of
a sudden failing on a regular basis?
Thanks for all of you advice, in advance.............Paul C.

Hello Paul,

CCleaner
In the Utilities category, uncheck Windows Defender. Having this checked
removes the history of when the last scan was run.
-=-

Code Error 80070005 - Access Denied
That's a permission error (access denied), try resetting the security
settings back to the defaults:
NO APPLY TO WINDOWS 7
How to reset security settings back to the defaults NO APPLY TO WINDOWS 7
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222>
Make sure you're running as an administrator.
-=-

If resətting the security settings did not resolve the Perm issue than look
to the installed security software as being the cause.
[antivirus/anti-malware/cookie or popup blocker/or, any security software
that monitors the registry keys for changes]

Turn Spyware Doctor off.
-=-

Windows Defender
Save it, close all windows/programs open, and run as admin.

Go here: Microsoft Malware Protection Center
<http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/default.aspx>
Click the link in the right frame under ' Latest Definition Updates '
for either the x86 [32 bit] or x64 [64 bit] edition of Windows installed.

*Save* the definitions that will now download.

Once the download completes close all open programs and browsers.

Now run the downloaded file [ if the edition of Windows is Vista, then
*right* click it and choose 'Run as administrator'. Follow the prompts
to allow it to run ].

Did that get the latest defs installed ?

Ǝиçεl, so far I've tried your suggestions for CCleaner and resetting
security settings. The latter did not work. When I ran the Microsoft Fix it
50198 declared some kind of an error and said it didn't complete correctly,
so I haven't a clue if my security settings were reset.

As far as any problems related to my security settings, I'm only running Win
Defender and Spyware doctor, but I turned the latter off right before
attempting to install the last Win Defender Update and the update failed
again so Spyware Doctor doesn't seem to be the issue, unless it has some
hidden firewall that I don't know about. How about trying to install Win
Defender WU's with my Windows Firewall turned off. Do you think I should try
that?

Then I tried some brute force and attempted to install Win Defender
definitions from the Microsoft Malware Protection Center. Something
unreadable flashed on the screen as it attempted some file activities but
when I checked in Add/Remove to see if the definitions were there I found
nothing. Actually none of my Win Defender definitions files show on the
Add/Remove list leading me to believe this is not the correct way to display
them. If I look in WU and do a `view history' the latest definitions from
the MS Malware protection Center attempt are not there leading me to believe
they didn't get installed.

At this point, unless you have more words of wisdom, my only recourse is to
call MS and see if they can walk me through it.

Last, the only thing that seems to work (sometimes!!??) is doing a restart
after running Spyware doctor and CCleaner and Win Defender. Then upon
reboot, the WU's for Win Defender get installed correctly. But this is a
royale pain to have to do WU's this way.

Thanks again for all your fine suggestions.........Paul C.
