From: muzician21 on 30 Dec 2009 09:18 Just got a Core2 Duo machine with XP Pro SP3. I find the explorer window I'm in keeps crashing when clicking on video files. Doesn't seem to matter which drive it is whether internal or external. Does it every time. If I click on the file before I hit acknowledge the warning message that comes up the file opens and continues to play in Win Media but the explorer window crashes, the desktop resets. Any idea how to cure this? Thanks

Is it a *new* machine - or *new to you* machine? If *new*... - It came *with* Windows XP - or was downgraded from whatever OS it came with to Windows XP? - If the latter - were all HARDWARE DRIVERS properly accounted for? If *new to you*... - Did you format/install everything fresh? - Were all HARDWARE DRIVERS properly accounted for? - Were all Windows Updates installed? What version of Windows Media Player? What specific version (START --> RUN --> WINVER) of Windows XP Professional do you have? What antivirus software is running (name and version)? What antimalware software has been used on the machine laterly? What specific file-type do you have to test with 'internal' - local to the machine? Does the event log have any better errors? -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

New to me. Per the seller it's a fresh install of XP Pro with all updates as of the date of shipping. The system is a custom - Gigabyte P35-DS3L mobo in an Antec case. > What version of Windows Media Player? 9.00.00.4507 > What specific version (START --> RUN --> WINVER) of Windows XP Professional 5.1 > What antivirus software is running (name and version)? AVG Free which I'm probably going to get rid of. I like Bitdefender. > What antimalware software has been used on the machine laterly? Probably none given that it's a new install. There's no such apps on the machine. Very few apps installed other than the windows installed stuff. He installed the AVG, Imgburn, Gimp, Open Office, Belarc. I installed MainConcept DV codec which has given no problems on at least 2 other XP machines, Pinnacle Studio which also installed an older verison of Quicktime. > What specific file-type do you have to test with 'internal' - local to the > machine? Not sure what you mean. You mean what kind of files are causing the problem? It happens when I open a window and click on DV avi files. I've tried other types, it only seems to happen with the video files. > Does the event log have any better errors? I see a bunch under Application apparently at the beginning of the new install all within about an hour on the same day that appear to be related to the AVG antivirus, a gap between the 12/12 and 12/28 with nothing, then a bunch related to Windows explorer over the last couple of days since I got the machine which I assume are all the crashes. I don't currently have the machine hooked up to the internet, do you need more detail?
From: muzician21 on 30 Dec 2009 14:07 Having hooked it up to the internet and done a Windows update, it now isn't displaying the behavior. Interesting. The only difference is I don't currently have the USB 2.0 external drive hooked up to it. I'll see if that could be making any possible difference.

Apparently that external drive is exactly what's causing the problem. Everything is fine until I hook it up. Same drive works fine on another machine running XP MCE. I can save files to it and get files from it from within a video app like Vegas, but accessing it with Windows is a problem. Will have to see if other USB drives have the same issue. |
