Right click on the task bar and open task manager from the menu that pops up. Select processes, and see which one is using all the memory

So what brilliant suggestion do you have to see where all the memory has gone - look for a keylogger?

It depends, also, on what there is in the reply. Eg, if the sender sent an email with includes from other web sites so that pics show up in the email then when your wife hits reply, it may take the email about to be sent some time to line all this up. Get her to test by hitting reply but not quoting. Turn the option to quote the letter off before hitting reply then see what happens.
