From: Carl Gross on 5 Mar 2010 11:42 I have SBS 2003 SP1 Premium. I would like to perform the Windows Server 2003 SP2 update but have seen too many red light issues about installing it. I know you used to have to uninstall a lot of updates before installing it. Is that still the case? Is there a fix for that (it's been several years, so I would think they've come up with a solution by now). Also, I would like to instal WSUS 3.0. Should I wait until SP2 is instaleed?
From: Dave Nickason [SBS MVP] on 5 Mar 2010 12:03 I would run the SBS BPA, and if everything looks OK, go ahead and install SP2. Upon installing, immediately update the server again to install any post-SP2 updates. (Obviously one would only install an SP after performing a good full backup). Then, I'd wait a few days or so to make sure I was comfortable with the server's operation, at which point I'd install WSUS 3. (After another good full backup). From: "Robbin Meng [MSFT]" on 9 Mar 2010 02:53 Hello Carl, Thanks for your post and Dave' input. I agree with Dave that running SBS BPA and performing full backup is very necessary before applying any critical Service Pack update. In addition, here are some articles about installing Windows 2003 SP2 on SBS 2003 server for your reference: Windows 2003 service pack 2 known issues on Small Business Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555912 Common Networking Issues After Applying Windows Server 2003 SP2 on SBS http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2007/04/24/common-networking-issues-after-applying-windows-server-2003-sp2-on-sbs.aspx Windows Service Pack 2 for Windows Small Business Server 2003 http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2008/08/11/windows-service-pack-2-for-windows-small-business-server-2003.aspx Release Notes for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773361(WS.10).aspx Hope this helps. From: Carl Gross on 9 Mar 2010 18:31 I ran the BPA and thats what concerned me. It may not be able to successfully instal Windows Server 2003. It told me that I may have to uninstall 315 updates. I thought I had seen that Microsoft had addressed this and put a fix out there, but I'm not sure. That is the thing I'm really looking for.
