From: PA Bear [MS MVP] on 2 Dec 2009 22:40 Norton (and McAfee) applications are notorious for not uninstalling or upgrading cleanly. Let's start by removing any Norton leftovers: 1. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe 2. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar). 3. Right-click on the file you saved in #1 above and select Run as Administrator to run the utility. Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot. 4. Test. Question: Is the McAfee application named McAfee Security Center or McAfee Internet Security? From: CptButtBeard on 4 Dec 2009 10:50 The McAfee application is the McAfee Security Center. The steps you told me to take with Norton, will that help the Windows Update problem? From: CptButtBeard on 6 Dec 2009 02:00 Ok, I downloaded both the Norton removal tool and Windows Update Agent installed and ran them both. Nothing happened after I ran the Norton tool. After I did the Update agent, I tried Windows Update with no success. Now when I click "Check for updates" I ge tthe following dialouge box: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I restarted and got the same message. No error code or anything else. "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: > Did you download/run the Norton Removal Tool & reboot before trying to > update again?
