I am taking this opportunity to reply only in light of the unresolved
issue.
I am running Windows Vista 32 bit Home premium edition. I have Office
2007 Enterprise Edition for students. All of these are not articles,
they are Micosoft Office security updates that came to my system through
microsoft update which is set to automatcially run and install found
updates. All of these failed to install and received the error code
8007066F.

KB951596
KB951944
KB951808

I have attempted to resolve through microsoft support but (the names
are many and difficult to respell here) their time zone and mine do not
match so when I can call them they are not open.

I have "repaired" "uninstalled" and "reinstalled" office 2007, I have
run office diagnostics, I have sent the support crew screen shots of all
attempted procedures, yet not a sole person has told me what the error
code actually means.

What is a 8007066F error code? What causes it? Where does it come
from? and I am truly curious about this---why is there no explanation
of it on the microsoft error code system support web sites? The link
that you get offered when an update fails for help with rejected windows
updates (?) which then says that windows has nothing on the error code
and then offers generic help links from microsoft support.

I am thinking the error code has something to do with upgraded
XP to Vista systems or the office software itself. I run spyware and
antivirus software registry cleaner software regularly and have never
had an incident on my system. However, I have even attempted to
download the updates stand alone and install from the downloaded file,
they rejected again with the same error code and I have also tried an
install of the updates from a safe mode only to find out windows update
on vista does not run when in safe mode.

My experience with the error code goes all they way back to May
which tells me the KB updates themselves are questionable(?).
I have hidden the security updates so Vista will not try to reinstall
them every time I turn my system on but I am truly at a loss
for what to do. I cannot be up at 2am my time to tallk to
a technician whose name I cannot even pronounce.

I am open to any suggestions on fixes for the error code, I sure would
like to know about it, and if anyone has ideas on what to do other than

hide them so they will not constantly reoccur.

Thanks for allowing this post, I welcome any help ideas on this.

My problem was more complex. Not only did I get this error code for Office
updates, but I also got error code 1643 for all other updates. I was able to
fix both of them. I'm not 100% sure that the first fix had anything to do
with the second, so I'm going to tell you what I think will fix your problem
alone, but I will also list every step I took, just in case the two problems
were tied together.

The office fix was the LAST thing I did. I had two versions of Office 2003,
then upgraded to 2007 Pro, then upgraded that to 2007 Enterprise. I also
upgraded from XP to Vista. I don't think it matters which version you have,
the link below will guide you thru the steps you need to take to clear out
any and every version of Office there is on your computer. Once they are
COMPLETELY gone, you will be able to re-install and the updates will work
just fine.

It states that you should uninstall using the regular uninstall method
instead of going through all of these steps. I used the uninstall on all of
the versions I could, but it didn't work on all of them (said I needed to
verify the existence of the source files). FYI: I think Office12 is office
2007 and Office11 is Office 2003. You will also need to look at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ as part of the process. All in all,
following these steps took me about 3-4 hours.

Before I fixed my Office problem, I thought I should fix and get any updates
for Vista. The other piece of my problem was my .NET Framework. Somehow it
got messed up, I assume during the upgrade to Vista. I found this .NET
Framework cleanup tool:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx
I had to reboot in safe mode for it to work. If you use it you have to
re-install it again. Just search MS downloads for Re-distributable .NET 1.1
or 1.0, whatever you have.

After fixing my .NET Framework, I also downloaded Windows Installer 4.5
(KB942288). After downloading Windows Installer, I started on my Office 2007
fix above. Again, I don't think you will need to do the .NET or get windows
Installer 4.5 to fix your Office updates, but just in case I listed my fixes
for those here too.
