MSUpdates offers you updates for stuff you had forgotten you had and then
asks you for discs you don't have after wasting your time searching and
downloading.

Unless you still can lay your hands on all your programme discs, best stick
with WU or you may be disappointed.

So what? Just because your default update source is Microsoft Update
doesn't mean Windows Update "doesn't exist any more."

Wanna "flip" back to Windows Update?...

Go to Microsoft Update website | Click on Change Settings in left pane |
Scroll to bottom of page | To Stop Using Microsoft Update | Disable
Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only (check).

When you're done, http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com will take you to
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate instead of
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate

But you may wanna stick with Microsoft Update:

What are the differences between Windows Updates...and Microsoft Updates?

While Windows Update provides you with updates specifically for Windows,
Microsoft Update expands the service to download and install updates for
other Microsoft software, such as Microsoft Office and Windows Live [as well
as Silverlight & Microsoft Security Essentials]...

If Windows Update is your default, Automatic Updates will NOT offer any
updates for Office, Silverlight or Windows Live (but Microsoft Security
Essentials will still continue to auto-update itself).

I'm starting to lose track of what is being asserted
here, but I used Windows Update on two machines
this morning, successfully.

Thanks for clearing that up. I have Office so, naturally, I want MU.

You're welcome & thanks for your feedback. You used to be able to stick
with Windows Update as default and then update Office via Office Update but
the latter was discontinued about a year ago.

Comment: I personally find Automatic Update takes much longer to
download/install updates (which can make AU a real "memory hog" each time it
kicks in) when Microsoft Update is the default. YMMV.
