Do you mean the threads here - http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=Code+80070005&btnG=Google+Search&meta= Also, have you tried a search for this error code in the web interface discussion group you are using - there were probs with this code in December. I've stopped the update service, renamed the SoftwareDistribution, restarted the service rebooted, the SoftwareDistribution directory is recreated but still I get the error. My issue is not related to a specific failed download (as per the Windows defender or HP driver threads), so I can't manually download an update. I've also run the command fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\ which made no difference. Checked that the update service is running under the local account, it is. I tired all this before posting here, I even went to email MS however they want £45 for that as my O/S was installed more that 90 days ago, a price I can't justify, so here I am.... So I still have the issue, thank you.

Sorry to hear that - you say you cannot do 'manual' - but are you being offered any updates via the yellow shield? - what were the last security/critical updates that you were able to install - have you removed the SP1 for Office 2007? to see if that solves your problem. What about System Restore? Apart from the above straws to clutch at I can think of nothing else. Just keep a watch on your thread - I would have thought others would have come up with possible solutions. Good luck Rgds Antioch

E.g. this search which was to have demonstrated how to avoid a possible mistake of searching for only unprefixed hex codes (e.g. you never mentioned 0x80070005 in your post) and not filtering for threads with answers or helpful threads, didn't show what I was expecting it could: (0x80070005 OR 80070005) (MSFT OR MVP) group:microsoft.* E.g. I had to add an extra expression to find what I wanted and even then none of the hits mentioned ProcMon, only FileMon. http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/browse_frm/thread/385c9dec95e58f01/c75626350e87e559?lnk=st&q=(filemon+OR+procmon)+(0x80070005+OR+80070005)++(MSFT+OR+MVP)++group%3Amicrosoft.*#c75626350e87e559 (Google Groups search for (filemon OR procmon) (0x80070005 OR 80070005) (MSFT OR MVP) group:microsoft.* - sorted by date to try to capture current thinking ) That post is now over a year old. High time for rediscovery. BTW the web interface still has it and (to my surprise) it has even been voted on so it could at least be found more easily by using that facility's Threads with helpful posts filter. Admittedly it does help to know about FileMon as a search term... ; ) FYI the excerpt from your log is not helpful because it does not show the context of the code that you are reporting. Good luck Robert Aldwinckle ---
