From: John Stein on
Here is my small, home network:

(1) Server 2008 Enterprise
(1) Vista Ultimate client
(1) XP Pro client

I have a cable modem (Comcast) with a Buffalo router. Each client has a
static IP address (I would rather it be DHCP from the router), and DNS is
pointing to Server 2008. On the server, I have a conditional forwarder
pointing to the gateway IP address of my Buffalo router.

1st, could this be a DNS issue which is making the XP client not respond to
the GPO from the server?
2nd, do I have DNS configured correctly?
3rd, is there a way my clients can obtain an IP address from the router and
I use GPO to assign the correct DNS IP address?

Thank you.

This would mean the DNS queries are sent to the Buffalo router. What does it do
with them? Is it set up to resolve these queries?

Maybe if the XP machine is manually set to use an incorrect DNS server

I don't know, you would need to post the output from IPCONFIG /ALL for the XP
and Vista PCs

DNS is usually set up on the DHCP server so when the client gets its IP via DHCP
from the router it also gets the DNS server addresses.

There are 10 types of people, those that understand binary and those that don't.

Hello John,

1. Yes.
2. To check DNS please post an unedited ipconfig /all from all 3 machines.
3. Even if the router is possible to provide DHCP services, use the server
instead, mor options and you can fully integrate it within DNS

Best regards
