From: buddyorliz on 14 Dec 2008 16:31 II think you may have asked me that before - sorry for not answering that, I wasn't sure what "source files" meant. What I Usually do is make little movies from my video clips & pictures (from my canon powershot camera. Most come off (not sure of the phrase) as jpg and the video clips avi. I put the SD card in the reader then transfer everything (except the thumb files that I delete - because they mess with my "Acronis" back up system) to one of my picture files, then what I was doing was making short movies with wmm then after saving them, putting them on Nero, adding up to 2 hours worth and burning them on DVD. It was all pretty automatic - until..... I also prefer the windows Microsoft office picture manager for editing my pictures, maybe because I am use to it, but it does everything I need it to do (between that and Paint). Most all my pictures are jpg, bmp, gif and I use to have a few Tiff (from my old dimage camera), I guess it just depends on who sends them to me and what camera they used - ??? What I was trying to do most recently - when I probable started having the most issues (and getting application errors) was take a part of a DVD (that I had dubbed from one of my VHS home tapes) and make a little movie out of that, so I could put it on myspace - so my family could see it. I got it cut down to the part I wanted and then.... I just put the DVD in to see if I could go through the same steps and I can not even get it to open. Another issue with Nero and the inCD (DLA or whatever --- went through hours of misery with that stuff one time too) probable. I do not have high def. And I am not really sure if I have a "normal" process. (besides the making DVD movies from my canon pictures that will play in everyone's DVD players and I can download on MySpace) I think you are suggesting that I can NOT just do Everything with one program so I need to get it broke down to "most import to me" of what I want to do. Dang it, cuz I like to try different things.... Wow - did there use to be a perfect all-purpose software for free? LOL. All purpose would be great, do they even make it? Like I said I did Buy NCH over a year ago, seams it was about $70.00. I had for some reason downloaded their free trial stuff and was having good luck so I bought it, but turned out it did not come with the actual stuff I needed, like the video converter (though I thought I bought the suite) so of course they wanted me to buy more - That was the end of me using that. Then I tried (or maybe it was before) the trial Nero and ran into all the issues of conflict there including my DVD drives so un-installed it, then for some reason a few months ago (June I think) I Bought it (?? go figure) another $60.00. I had tried the Coral trial version and was going to buy it BUT there support was in Canada I think and Not very supportive, so I think that is why I went back to Nero. I'm not sure if when my automatic updates (windows, office And other) update things if that is possible for issues - Do you know? Can I have to many codec things? I read somewhere on your web that you can actually look at my computer, I can't remember the charge for that, but even if I paid you to look at it, your not going to guarantee me you can fix it, set me up with something that will do all the video stuff I want it to and NOT mess with any other programs I use - Are you? When I first got this Dell computer everything worked great, no issues, lots of room. It was my second computer and I loved it. Not until I started using other software (trials or complete) did I have any issues. And they pretty much guaranteed that. I learned (not that I practice what I know) if you buy it all together they have all ready gotten the bugs out so make sure you buy Everything to start with. But alas I did not know what I wanted for sure. Money is an issue - but I Need something that will work and I need to know how to work it (support is important). I'm will to pay for another program if there is one out there that will work! I would need to know things like, do I uninstall all this other stuff (Nero, Nch) do I delete drivers or codecs or???? Again, Thanks "PapaJohn" wrote: > You don't really talk about the kinds of source files you mostly use. From: PapaJohn on 15 Dec 2008 01:20 Thanks for the long chatty post... here are some slightly shorter comments: AVI files can be compressed and decompressed with any of hundreds of codecs. They may or may not work with Movie Maker. I'll illustrate with 3 examples. One of my digital cameras is a Canon PowerShot SD750... it records video as AVI files with MotionJPEG compression. Yours probably does the same. Such files usually work in Movie Maker using a basic codec that comes with the operating system. But when other codecs come into the system from other places, the codec used to open it often shifts and could result in Movie Maker issues. You could resolve the issues by unchecking a codec in the compatibility list or installing another codec to shift it again to one Movie Maker works OK with. The Canon MotionJPEG files import and work fine in my MM2.1 A Flip camcorder makes AVI files compressed with the Xvid codec, something that Movie Maker typically doesn't get along with. If they import you can expect routine crashes and hangs. Some Sanyo camcorders record to AVI files compressed with an MPEG-4 codec. I run with all line items in the compatibility list unchecked and can't import the Flip or Sanyo AVI files into MM2.1 without checking a codec in the list or converting the files to ones that work. As I don't have a Flip or Sanyo camcorder, it's not an issue and can deal with them as needed. Using MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MOV, Flash and other video files each has their own complexities and conversion to other files is needed or warrented. Even Vista's Ultimate system, which is supposed to be able to handle MPEG-2 files, has given me problems. One of my articles on Bright Hub is about a recent such issue. The audio track can be even more difficult to deal with than the video. I use different software utilities for different conversions. Making DVDs is a totally different subject than making movies... Movie Maker isn't involved, but can be effected by installing DVD making software. A couple weeks ago I found that, after installing Corel's DVD Copy 6, MM2.1 wouldn't start-up without crashing, even with all line items in the compatibility list unchecked. The resolution was to uninstall the Corel software. It's rare that you have to totally remove an app so I wouldn't worry about having too many codecs on your system... just deal with those that cause problems. And you shouldn't have to delete any drivers. Users of Nero are happy with their software. They sometimes need some training to understand the options. I usually make discs with Roxio/Sonic software or Vista's DVD Maker. Mostly I don't make discs, preferring online distribution. Yes, my 'Products and Services' page includes online problem-solving or training sessions in which I can show you how I use my computer, or see and control yours. There's an hourly fee for such services, as noted on the page. From: Liz on 15 Dec 2008 15:01 Well Sir You have taught me a lot - though my memory is not what it once was, I am glad this forum page will be here for a long time for me to look back on.... I am sorry for being so "Chatty" I know that is not good here, I have issues with staying focused, especially when I am not sure what I am talking about or where Exactly I want to wind up. When I first starting working on this particular issue I read some of your pages and the first two things I did were to decrease the Graphics Hardware Acceleration Which did nothing then to rename that divxaf.ax file to divxaf.ax_ and that did not help either. Tried that twice booting after the second try.... This morning I got to looking at just my application files (which I -after 15 years on a computer - did not know you could do, not that I know any more about what an application file actually is, but can find the ones I have installed). Anyway nothing was clicking as to what the issue was. Then---something made me think about my last downloads (something to do with something I saw referring to December 3 date) On that date I had downloaded two things per Nero's recommendation because of issues there. (Neither of which helped my Nero issues ) One was - afreeCodecVT The other was a codec pack which I can not find the name of now because I uninstalled it. I noticed the names of some things I have discovered because of this site and others that could be the issue so I uninstalled the pack and YEP--- No more issues - well I don't know about no more but I can open my video's and I can open them in WMM YES YES YES..... I don't know why just renaming some didn't work and I wish to heck I knew what the pack was called so I could let you know but anyway for now I am up and running again. Thank you so much for your time and tolerance. Liz Ps. If you tell me how I can find the name of what I just uninstalled I will let you know what it was "PapaJohn" wrote: > Thanks for the long chatty post... here are some slightly shorter comments: > > AVI files can be compressed and decompressed with any of hundreds of codecs. > They may or may not work with Movie Maker.
