I pulled the video card, a Radeon 3870, and plugged the monitor into the
built in DVI port. It seems to boot fine and work normally.

That is what it does, no disk activity and a faded screen.

Didn't think to try that but will when I put the video card back in.

Everything (games, etc.) performs normally after the desktop appears.

Thanks.

My monitor has a card reader but it is not connected (connects via USB).

I have had similar symptons but mine was due to; i believe; as I'm
still testing a setting within the bios

I have a gigabute MA790XT-UP4p with a rosewill card reader....

I went into the bios; under Intergrated Peripherals; and disabled Legacy
USB storage detect. It's been working normally now for about two days
and maybe 6 reboots..

My BIOS does have that option. The default is enabled but why would that
cause the boot to stop?

Any driver conflict can cause the boot to stop, as can any hardware
failure. You need to diagnose your entire system one step at a time to
eliminate the usual suspects with the expectation that you could
eventually end up with a bad video card. I have just learned from
experience that video cards don't just blink out when they go bad,
sometimes they exhibit damned strange behavior as they die.
Look for device driver conflicts.
Uninstall and reinstall your video driver.
Check your power supply.
Clean up the OS.
Try another video card.
