If you are limited to a 24k dial-up connection, have you considered
using an off-line email/news reader such as Agent? It will allow
you to down/up load all your messages, all at one time. You can then
go off-line and spend all day reading and replying to your messages,
and then when you are ready do the up/down load again.

If you are limited to a dial-up that is also your voice line, it's the
only way to go.
