I could become a fan of this type of forum!! Your last memo gave me a clue - I tried to press the F7 button to see the dialog box you referred to and realised the key was already slightly depressed!! I pulled the keyboard apart, unjammed the key, reassembled it and presto- no more spell checker. Wonderful thank you.
