OpenOffice IMO as long as you install all the terrible MS Windows fonts
and stick to those. I've been using OpenOffice for years now to produce
Word documents and so far none of my clients have noticed.

BTW, if a client is using .doc, "professional" isn't the correct term
for them.

The accurate term is f[NO CARRIER]

LOL. I'm certain that many businesses still use .doc format files for
ease of transport between machines though.

Doesn't textedit save as .doc?
