i have a macbook running the latest snow leopard, my touch is the 3g 32
gig model. can i take one of my musical dvds, convert it to a suitable
format (?) and sync it to my touch? what software is required? how
long would it take for a 45 minute video and how much space?

You can rip a DVD to a format supported by the iPod Touch using
Handbrake.

I can't tell you how much space it'll take, though, as I always encode
to a higher quality than the iPod touch really needs.

He might also need VLC media player on his system to rip protected DVDs
(Handbrake uses VLC's decoder to break the copy protection).

I use Handbrake and convert them to mp4's. Works fine. I set it to the
standard iTouch resolution. In the past I used Mac the Ripper to break
the protection and then into Handbrake. A typical 45 minute video is
about 400 MB's. Be careful to set the little slide draw on the right to
iPod or it won't work.

To rip music CDs, you only need itunes. It'll rip music CDs and
automatically import the resulting tracks into itunes. Create custom
playlists with your favorite songs, then sync those playlists to your
ipod touch in the usual manner.

To rip video DVDs or other video files, firsts download Handbrake
http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php and select the source DVD or file,
select the "Apple iphone & ipod touch" preset. When it finishes,
import the resulting *.m4v file into itunes, and sync it to your ipod
touch in the usual manner.
