I'd try a different cdrom
From: Ron Patterson on
I have 2 CDs I have tried - my original Win XP SP1 and Win XP SP2 - I
have used both recently to install windows on another drive so I know they
work. Suddenly I can not boot into either of them.

After you altered your boot order in the BIOS, did you save the changes?
(My guess is you didn't.)

Assuming both CDs are fine, perhaps there is something wrong with the
CD-ROM drive or a connecting cable.

Or maybe there is a problem with the keyboard. If you are able to
successfully boot off the CD, you should see a screen that looks like
this:

http://www.midssynchro2007.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/xpsetuppressanykeyto.jpg

Do you get that screen?

If so, remember to press the "any" key. ;-)

If pressing any key doesn't work, try another keyboard.

BTW, why are you performing the Repair Install. Still damage due to the
trojans? If so, you may still have trojans (or other malware) in your
system that are undetectable. If so, a Repair Install will not help you.

Dave

When the CD would not boot, I checked my BIOS boot order even though I KNEW
it was set to boot to the CD first.
And it was - so I just hit F10 to save and exit and clicked on yes. Still
would not boot. Went back and again checked the boot order in the BIOS -
it still would not boot. Very strange. I am going to disconnect all the
hard and zip drives and try that next.

Continuing thanks for working with me here and many times in the past. This
computer has a life of its own. One thing after another.
Still have the previous problem with not having administrative privileges
not matter if I log on as Admin or as Ron Patterson, Computer
Administrator.
But that only pops up when I try to update Quicken. Can load and / or
update other programs with no problem. One hour on support with Quicken was
fruitless. Tried uninstall and reinstall and same message. Been trying
all suggestions for a week now. That is why I want to try Windows Repair.

New hard drive and Win 7 on order - that will take a good 12 to 14 hrs to
load everything, update everything, and configure all the bells and
whistles. Then I will have time to go back and tinker with this problem
again.

Ron

When you set up Win7

Make a full backup or image of the system, and label this first backup
"factory setup" or something similar
Make and test an emergency boot CD. Check to make sure you can restart
you system from the disk and access your backup files from that disk

hope this advice works
