In MSN Live Messenger, I saw my friend icon with a small green square. But
the square has a red slash. I cannot talk to him. How can I fix it?

You can ask your friend to put his/her status "online"
If he/she has made that online status, just you and he/she re-signing again
the messenger.
It'll work.
