From: Scott B on 1 Jan 2006 19:21 Good day all, I received a Toshiba R15 tablet PC and I am very happy with the computer itself. However, Toshiba decided to install about 15 "helper" programs that are cluttering up my tray. I would like to create a Windows XP Tablet PC Edition install disk from the PC itself and install Windows and my applications (leaving off the clutter of the Toshiba programs). The recovery DVD is simply a Norton Ghost image of the entire system. Is there somewhere I can get a copy of XP Tablet Edition or can I construct one from the i386 folder / files? Thanks, Scott
From: Chris H. on 1 Jan 2006 19:49 Only builds currently available to the public are from MSDN, where a subscription is required and the use is for development purposes only. How about doing like I do, and get images installed, pared down, and the use your own program (I use Acronis True Image) for the back-up copy on a partition on the hard drive? Takes about 11 minutes to jump from one image to another with the Acronis boot system. The other issue you may have "making your own" is the restore image from Toshiba is licensed to that particular install routine, according to the way the OEM created it. -- Chris H. From: Juan I. Cahis on 2 Jan 2006 15:56 Scott, give me your email, and I will send a PDF article to you about how to create a TabletPC CD with the files on your hard disk. See http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/tpcdploy.mspx Also here is another alternative: BEGIN-OF-QUOTE Finally, I could create a bootable WinXP CD with the stuff that ACER includes in the C drive!!! As you know, ACER only gives you the restore CD to restore your TabletPC to the original state, but what happens if you need to repair your TabletPC-WinXP-Pro installation? Here is how to create a bootable WinXP-TabletPC CD. First, you need to get the following WEB pages from the Internet: "MSFN - Create Win XP CD Slipstreamed with SP1 - Nero" and "Windows XP/SP1 Slipstreamed CD - Nero Burning Rom Procedure". Do a Google search for them, and note that if you don't have Nero, there are sister pages for Easy Cd Creator too. In these pages you will have a detailed explanation about how to create a bootable CD and how to get the file "boot.bin" which is the CD's boot sector. Then, you need to follow the procedures in the WEB pages above, and create a bootable CD, using the boot.bin file as a boot sector, to label it "WXPOEM_EN", and including the following in its root directory: Volume in drive F is WXPOEM_EN Volume Serial Number is 900E-C059 Directory of f:\ 03-Sep-02 01:23 AM <DIR> CMPNENTS 06-Mar-03 10:06 PM <DIR> ELEMENTS 03-Sep-02 01:26 AM <DIR> I386 15-Jan-03 10:38 AM 2,048 boot.bin 23-Apr-04 12:40 PM 6 ISACER.ID 23-Mar-03 02:37 PM 92 PRELOAD.AAA 23-Mar-03 02:38 PM 3 PRELOAD.TAG 30-May-04 08:36 PM 0 WIN51IP 30-May-04 08:36 PM 0 WIN51IP.SP1 6 File(s) 2,149 bytes 3 Dir(s) 0 bytes free Of the above, the three subdirectories ("CMPNENTS", "ELEMENTS" and "I386"), the "ISACER.ID", and both the "PRELOAD" files, are located by ACER in your "C:\" drive. You need to create both "WIN51IP" files doing something like "ECHO AA > WIN51IP" and "ECHO AA > WIN51IP.SP1" from the command prompt. You will end with a 630 MB CD. Maybe, you should also add there other subdirectories with extra ACER material, like "DOCS". The idea is to have in one CD all the drivers and material needed to repair your PC's installation in the case of a disaster. I don't know if you will be able to make a fresh install of the TabletPC Operating System from this CD, but you will be able to boot from it and to repair an existent one. At least, I could boot from the CD and arrive to the CD's Recovery Console without any problem. Create this CD before you have a disaster and it is too late!!! Enjoy!!! END-OF-QUOTE. From: Juan I. Cahis on 2 Jan 2006 16:35 Here is another one: BEGIN-OF-QUOTE After several hours of research and trials here is how I did it: I don't guarantee that it will work for you though. That's because some methods described on forums didn't work for me. You need a restore CD which comes with the tablet and a separate Win XP Pro installation CD. Don't purchase a new XP Pro if you have one already. That's because you'll be using serial number on the sticker at the bottom of the TPC. Copy files from WinXP Pro installation CD to a hard drive under some temporary folder, say C:\WinTPC. Before doing that you may integrate SP2 into it (it works, I tried). The link below shows how to integrate SP2. http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html In the link above follow instrcutions up to "Creating a Bootable CD" and then stop; ie don't burn the CD yet. Now that you've copied SP2-integrated WinXP Pro installation files under C:\WinTPC folder, completely delete C:\WinTPC\I386 folder. Then copy I386 folder found on your tablet recovery disks under C:\WinTPC. Copy folder CMPNTNTS from recovery disk under C:\WinTPC (there already should be CMPNTNTS which is added by SP2 I guess). Just overwrite all the files. Go back to http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html and proceed with burning your brand new installation CD (start with "Creating a Bootable CD" on the page). The method desribed here worked for me. I hope it works for you too. Regards. --------------------- PS: I own an LG LT20 tablet which comes with no recovery disk whatsoever. But I used the following folders: C:\CMPNTNTS C:\Windows\I386 END-OF-QUOTE Scott B <noemail(a)nomail.com> wrote: >Good day all, > >I received a Toshiba R15 tablet PC and I am very happy with the >computer itself.
