But , as i wrote in my 1st msg, when user 1 on pc2 opens a cmd window and enters net view \\pc1 he already gets error5 Andrew

I was thinking the same but how do you prevent user 1 of pc2 to access folders of user 1 on pc1 ? User 1 of pc2 is simply not granted any access on pc1 ... he is just allowed to use the printer there has to be another way ... if all fails i was thinking about enabling the guest account but even that doesn´t solve the problem In the meantime i think i recall that user 1 on pc2 had another name once. If this is somehow connected to the problem i don´t know how to fix that without making things worse Andrew

Even this can be problematic because if he prints, he will be using spool32.dll and that probably requires writing to a spool file. I am not sure in that case if the user will be "System" or if it would be *that* user. I say give special permission a shot. Basically you would right-mouse click on the folder(s) and using the Security tab, set a "deny" special permission. I would assume deny "List Folders" and "Read" would be sufficient.
