However, you can't just open a dbx file in Outlook Express, because there has to be an entry for it in the folder index file, 'folders.dbx'. Fortunately this isn't that hard to arrange. Assuming the name of 'test.dbx', this would be a process for viewing the contents: 1. Open OE to a working identity, and create a folder named 'test'. 2. Go to Tools, Options, and on the Maintenance tab click Store Folder. 3. Highlight the folder name and path that appears, and press control+C. 4. Close Outlook Express. 5. Go to Start, Run, and press control+V to paste in the path to the store folder. Press Enter. 6. Locate the 'test.dbx' file, and rename it - perhaps 'xtest.dbx'. 7. Copy in the 'test.dbx' file you want to view. 8. Restart OE. You should be able to view the contents of the 'test' folder. HTH -pk

If it is 167KB or less, it is empty. If the size is larger and you want to see the messages, import it into Outlook Express. You make erroneous assumptions. I know what a .dbx file is. Also, if you go to control panel--file types--and scroll to dbx it will state the file can be opened with notepad if it isn't too big of course.
