I want to draw a semi-circular ditch. Ditches are usually drawn as rectangular but i want one with a round bottom. What MATLAB 'trick' can I use to accomplish this?

No trick, but I suggest that you read about the super-ellipse,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superellipse
In particular something similar to the squircle might be appropriate for
you.
