That would be <Alt>-F2 for the second console, <Alt>-F3 for the third,
etc., and <Alt>-F1 to return to the first console, provided you're not
running X on any of them. During installation, the fourth console has
information about what's going on, if memory serves.

From X you must press ctrl together with alt-f? to get to another console.
From a text console you can choose to only press alt-f? or ctrl-alt-f?
where ? is meant to indikate any function key f1 - f12.
