From: MZB on 26 Apr 2010 12:31 OK, I've been wrestling with random freezes on my computer. It is getting worse. I checked the event log and got: The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period So, does this indicate a failing hard drive and/or controller? Mel

Or, if you have it on your system, use the Dell diagnostic (F12 at startup, choose it from the boot menu). Be aware that either diagnostic routine may push a failing drive over the edge. I think you should carefully examine the cable connecting the drive for kinks, tears, tight folds and similar problems first. But I also think that now would be a very good time to back up any important data...! Something is wrong, and you should cover your own interests before trying to sort it out. So get your data while the drive will give it to you--and then diagnose the problem! William

I'm not 100% sure it's the drive but either way, the BACKUP will ease the pain of losing stuff if the drive suddenly craps out.
