My first camera was a Minolta X-700 and came with an excellent owners
manual. It taught me the basics of photography. It definately pays to read
the manual.

Ok, fair enough. I was thinking of the light being the limiting factor,
therefore trying to catch as much light as possible.

You're not supposed to tell people that!

It's one of the trade secrets of photography that you can become a

manual. It explains what all the buttons and menu options actually do
and has useful hints about how take good photographs. Very few people
know that.

Pretty much in the same manner as they recognize rhetorical questions!
