1) If I plug my iPod into a USB port on my MacBook via the standard USB
cable, while the MacBook is connected to the 110v AC adaptor **but
powered off** (not just asleep), will the iPod's batteries be recharged?

2) If the MacBook (or whatever) is **someone else's MacBook**, and I
just want to recharge my iPod's batteries, nothing else (especially, not
start up this other person's copy of iTunes!), what's the necessary
protocol?

Thanks.

No

Plug in the iPod and get your fingers ready. As soon as the Sync
appears with the "slide to cancel" then immediately slide to cancel.

(Or Kill iTunes during launch before it starts to sync.)

Also, if the Macbook is on but no one is logged in, then you will charge
without syncing.

actually, when itunes sees the ipod, it will alert the user that it's
synced to a different machine and it will ask what to do. click ignore
or whatever the button says. do *not* click sync, or it will sync to
someone else's music library.

or set itunes to not auto-launch and more importantly, to not auto-sync.

that works, as well as sleeping, but a usb plug-in will wake it.

I think not, but you may want to try it. I have observed that my iPod's
batteries actually drain if the Mac is asleep! I am guessing nothing
happens if it is turned off, but worst case, the battery may drain. I
am fairly certain it won't charge, but I have never tried it.

mine charges when the laptop is asleep, and my old ipod charged on my
sleeping powerbook and even ibook.
